Run 12v charger from inverter
« on: March 15, 2008, 11:25:36 PM »
This is a real newbie question and dosen't make since to me. I am collecting say 2.6 amps at 13.5vdc and my 110vac battery charger drains 1.3 amps but will charge back at 6 amps. Why can't I run my charger from my inverter @ 1.3 amps and charge the bank back @ 6amps ? It seems like an endless cycle in my favor With extra power to boot . Am I foolish thinking this way or will it work ?

A Watt is a unit of work, often calculated as Volts-times-Amps.

When your charger takes 1.3 amps of current flow @ 110 VAC, it equals ~143 watts

When it provides 13.5 VDC @ 6 Amps it equals ~81 watts

Your charger is converting high volts/low amps, into lower volts/higher amps, with an apparent loss of 30ish Watts in the transition, usually realized as heat.

Every power conversion will suffer some losses.

the charger draws 1.3 amps at 120 volts for 156 watts the charger puts out 6 amps at 15 volts for 90 watts. that is what it has to be otherwise it would be what is called overunity and that violates all the laws of physics as we know them.

you mite want to google watts law and ohms law for more info on how this works especially watts law in this instance.
