72 volt mill
« on: May 09, 2009, 09:08:32 PM »
Hi all, Never thought I would be interested in this (interest is solar thermal) but I am about to buy a electric conversion kit for my Chevy S-10. Ever dealt with Wilderness EV?

let me know how it was. Well anyway I've been reading this site about three years now and I can't recall anyone building bigger than 48 volt systems. Is it a inverter thing or something else? The truck will be a 72 volt system with 12 6 volt deep cycle flooded batteries and a dc to dc inverter for the 12 volt factory stuff and I thought it would be great to go a little greener by charging it with wind on the days that I could. I already have a electric bike and it's great to get back and forth to work on dry days and I also get a great parking spot too but it rains sometimes.

Yes 72 volt will work at 250 amp max load. (400 amp controller programed to 250 max)

I'm looking for range not speed here.

No where in town has a speed limit over 35.

No interstates here.

All flat ground. (almost)

7 mile round trip to work and back.

Problems: Dump load, charge controller. OK fire at will! It's just an idea!

No problems with the machine, 72v will be fine, just increase turns and reduce wire size. High voltage dc takes a bit of handling but if you are prepared to play with EV then you have to learn to live with it. You will have to learn about dc switchgear.

Charge controller is no real problem but you may not get a commercial one. Remember it must be a diversion controller, don't be tempted to try to feed the mill into some commercial charger the raw ac will be a disaster.

Well at least I know it can be done now! Thanks.

I'll read up on the switch gear stuff but it's at least a next winter job, I'll just use the charger that comes with it until then.

I've seen there motors on e-bay for a couple of years but always the same thing ......No controller. Have thought about finding a wrecked one at a junk yard but do you think they exist? NO at least not yet.
