Brief comments...

I see a lot of friction and moving parts...

The power you get from a wind turbine is all about the swept area of the collector.  How big would this have to be to effectively sweep say... 100 square feet or so.  That'd  be (if it were and efficient collector, which I don't think it is)  what it would take to compete with say ... a 12' diameter 'conventional' HAWT (horizontal axis wind turbine).

Honestly, I don't think it would work very well at all.  There are lots of ways to capture power from the wind, I don't think this is a simple or cost effective.

If I ever figure out what's in the box then maybe I can think outside of it.

Vash;

First I have to say, nice pic!!

To be very honest and I for one like VAWTs for several reasons, but this one may not be very effective and will need a fairly high wind speed just to get it turning.

The gears will steal most ALL if any turning ability. Noise will also be a BIG factor.

The deflector is interesting and good to keep the wind off the frontal area of the blades as they come back around.

However, this may have merits for hydro since water is 8 times more dense than air

The 2nd pic did not have the deflector and, if built, would be better if included. Without it the air or water will be trying to move the blades in opposing directions causing it not to move either way.

Nice drawing on the chain sets!!

What Dan said.

And it takes quite a bit for something like that to start turning.

Between the gears, bearing grease, etc, I think it would take a lot of wind and/or size just to get it to move at all.

And it would have to be low speed, which is not so great for making power.

The idea of using the same wind for 2 sets of blades tends to ignore Betz.

The layout ratio shown could use a blade shape to get the most from both sides with a nonsymmetrical airfoil.

I think it would need to be pretty big just to make itself turn at all.

Hi

One of the arguments for VAWT is the fact it can work regardless of wind direction, you have a tail on yours thus defeating the main argument.

Looks to big and heavy to get it up very high to be in the wind. Then it looks to heavy to be able to turn into the wind. Also I don't think the chain would be able to support the props properly.

Looking at something like this would convince me to make a HAWT instead.

And also

This reminds me mildly of my VAWT idea

There are also very many unusual VAWT ideas in that story.

Kind of looks to me like an old John Deere corn picker running in reverse.  I don't recall that I've ever seen the wind make one of those run though.
