Starting first gen
« on: December 16, 2005, 10:27:35 PM »

This is my first try at building a wind genny.Wanted to see if I could actually build something that would spin.It does that real fine.Just need to figure out what to put on it for power production.Blades are aluminum 36" each.Found pics on tdm blade posting.

hi Dan!

glad you took the first step.  it looks just great, and a 6 foot set of blades is a nice size for some good power production.

i should post a pic of my first unit. yours looks a lot better than mine did. i bought one of those 38volt dc motors made by Redmond at princess auto for $9.00. then made a one piece 2 blade prop at 2 foot diam. only thing i had connected to it was an auto tail light bulb. it did light it occasionally. i even used a tomatoe can for weather protection of the motor.

i think a nice match for your blades would be a 1/2 hp 180 volt permnanent magnet motor. it is a good step above a tdm and is on the industrial side of duty. you often see them on ebay and often very very cheap. look for 1/2hp, pm,180 volt armature. they usually come with what is called a c-flange and mounting feet. the shaft is 5/8 inch diam, and the frame is refered to as "frame 56".

all you need is a blocker diode and you are charging a batt.

have fun, and when you get bored with it, make another.  lol

Hi zubbly

I have a GE 1 hp 180 volt motor and I'm going to put a set of art randolf blades on it,but first have to make a mount for it. The magnets in this motor seem to be very strong, any metal near the body of it grab on real quick so if i make my mount out of pipe and steel will that effect the output of this motor or is it not an issue.. Thanks
