Voltage Controller
« on: December 12, 2007, 02:17:21 PM »
Having a background in electronics I would jump at the chance to build my own controller for my wind turbine (Ametek 30VDC). If anyone has info on kits please advise.

Thanks

Oatley has a kit.  Kind of expensive with shipping from AU.  More intended for 3-ph.

I have a kit intended for Ametek type stuff. Still $12.50 each, $3 S&H per order.

I have one of Ghurds.

It's neat, works well, and is expandable.  I know it's nice to make things for  yourself but at the price it's hardly worth the effort.  I don't have a great deal of electrical nounce, so being able to just put it together and then sit and look at the flashing light was very nice.

Ghurd,

Thanks for the info on your kit. I am slowly piecing to-gether my system and your kit is a valuable addition. Didn't mention in my previous post that I will be using a bank of 12vdc deep cycle batteries wired parallel. And, for a load I plan on a 12vdc 600w water heater element.

I would like to purchase your kit. Please email me at rwa864@hotmail.com for shipping  and Paypal payment request.

Thanks

WOW - a 600W dump load on an AMTEK....

I think I might find a load a little closer to the maximum out put of the generator.

Good luck,

That's what I said!  That's in the C60 class.  Could do it with an IGBT.

Might be a good idea to use a 24V 600W water heater element, which will dump about 150W at 12V.

Easier to control. More heat in the water, less in the wire. Easier on the battery.

And cheaper!

Looks like I need a 24v heater element... where do I look for those in Can/US?

By the way, what is the average output for a Ametek 30vdc using (3) 32" pvc blades?

Hey Capt;

And your's beats all the ones I've put together by a country mile:-)

How's it doing since installing it?

I will say that of the 4+ units I've assembeled and installed they're all doing just like they are suppsoed to. I've checked a few just to make sure they aren't getting off the set dump voltage and none have needed any "tweaking"

Cheers

From the handy IRC wind power calculator:

389.9 watts possible from 2.5 ft dia prop (4.9 sq ft) in 25 mph wind (density of 1.225000),62.4 watts output assuming generator is 80% efficient and Cp of 0.20

That is with real blades, not PVC pipe blades.
